Last Saturday was the Idaho State Scholastic Chess Championship, open to all K-12 students. There are sections for each grade level up through 9th. My friend, Katie, and I decided to play up in the High School Division. Never before has a girl won the title of “Top Scholastic”. It’s always been the guys title…but that changed on Saturday. Not only did a girl win 1st place at the tournament, girls also won 2nd and 3rd. Katie and I tied for 1st place with 4.5/5 points. Due to the tiebreak system, Katie was awarded 1st, I was awarded 2nd, and the other girl, Erica, was rewarded 3rd, with 4/5 points. Because this was something that has never happended before, Channel 6 sent out a camera guy to interview us.
All three of us were battling it out last month to win the Girl’s Scholastic Chess Championship, open to all K-12 girls. All three of us tied for 1st place with 3/4 points, all losing to each other. Because of tiebreaks, Erica was awarded 1st, I was awarded 2nd, and Katie 3rd.
